Prince Mshiyeni Memorial Hospital is a State Hospital based in Umlazi. I was fortunate enough to visit today, and participate in play therapy with the children at Umduduzi Hospice Care. Play Therapy is a form of treatment that helps the children learn to develop skills while interacting with other children. My activities today included reading, making puzzles and playing board games. It was so evident that children enjoy spending time with other people and participating in these activities that allows them to have fun whilst learning in hospital.

After having a chat with Dr. K Moodley, who is a Specialist Paediatrician at Prince Mshiyeni Memorial Hospital, I was given an insight into the common struggles that the community have to face everyday. A lot of children suffer with malnutrition, the main cause being lack of basic resources such a water, as well as the financial resources to live a healthy life. The top 5 main causes of death among children are Malnutrition, Tuberculosis, diarrhoea, HIV and Pneumonia. All of which are very common in third world countries. Unfortunately in some cases children leave the hospital healthy and are not able to sustain that health due to the lack of resources within their community hence impacting their scholastic journey.

It is crucial to open up and view the world through the eyes of these children and many others in such unfortunate circumstances. We are privileged to have a comfortable lifestyle and therefore need to help wherever we can. Linking Arm is dedicated to changing the path for children and creating a better future for our youth. I would like to thank all the staff at Prince Mshiyeni Memorial Hospital and frontline workers who play a crucial part in making our country better and who risk their lives everyday in order to save other peoples lives.

Remember to sanitize, social distance and wear a mask.
